We're Miles and Katherine Lewis, owners of Petals in Bloom Flower Farm along with our 4 children, Jane, Anna, Eli and Henry. While we both grew up having some experience helping with a small family garden here or there, dabbling in growing flowers in our garden, I would never have guessed we'd someday call ourselves farmers.
In 2017 we were blessed to be given a piece of Katherine's family's horse farm and dreamed of how we'd make use of the land. We decided to raise our 4 children here, on a farm where they could pick ripe berries for snacking in the summertime on their way down to the pond to look for frogs or build forts, or take a walk through the woods to Grandma and Grandpa's house.
About the same time, Katherine's growing interest in flowers was taking off. Wanting to learn everything she could and explore the possibility of one day starting a flower farm of her own, she signed up for Floret's Workshop and began to learn from everyone she could. Our daughter Jane took the course right along with her and on the cusp of their new venture started to dream and plan together what they'd plant the following year. Jane thought of the name “Petals in Bloom” for our little patch of colorful zinnias that first summer. And they were hooked.
Our children love to help and we try and include them whenever we can... that's the beauty of a family farm! We use organic and sustainable farming practices as it's important to us to protect the health and well being of not only our own children but also of anyone working on our farm and ultimately, our customers and community!
Anna's favorite part of flower farming is putting the fairy dust (aka bone meal) in each hole we plant in. Jane really enjoys cutting the flowers and making bouquets (along with making sure everyone is doing everything by the book). Eli likes helping “the guys”, and I'm sure Henry will have a favorite "job" when he gets old enough to help.
There's nothing better than driving the side by side around our flower fields at the end of the day to see our work or spot buds seemingly ready to burst into bloom with excitement themselves. They all tell a story, and testify to the love and care that go into the flowers here at Petals in Bloom.
Flowers have an amazing impact on everyone who comes in contact with them. They brighten up your day, bring you closer to nature, and just seem to do something good for your soul. And by sharing our flowers, that's the experience we want to share with you.
Sadly in October of 2024 our world was changed when Katherine was suddenly and unexpectedly diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of colon cancer. The technical description for this stage 4 cancer is high grade neuroendocrine small cell carcinoma which had already spread to her liver at the time of diagnosis. After just three months and trying every treatment possible, Katherine succumbed to this terrible disease on January 18th, 2025. Her legacy lives on in this flower farm and in our kids. She will be missed forever.
